facebook round robin, 4-22-09

Join us on Wed, 4/22/09 for an informal gathering to talk about this new thing called facebook. We will take a look at what facebook can do for you as a developer and as someone that might already have a website that you want to give more exposure to. This will be a fairly unstructured meeting so bring your facebook questions and hopefully you will get some answers.

Remember, the meetings are now on WEDNESDAY! The meetings start at 7 and last for about 2 hours. There is a map to the meeting location under the New Location menu item to the left on our website, www.OCDelphi.org.

Thanks,

"Double Header" on 3/25/09

In honor of the beginning of baseball season, this upcoming meeting will be a double header. Greg Stevenson will be discussing two different topics.

Internationalizing your application

Greg will discuss an easy and systematic way to prepare your application so that it can easily support any language or locale. The approach uses standard, open source tools and code that have minimal impact on your existing applications. This will also work with most existing versions of Delphi, including Delphi 2009.

Logging on Steroids

Logging to text files has been a core debugging practice from the early days of programming. It is often the only practical way to determine the root cause of things like interment issues that occur on a single customer’s system. Logging should be a key component of every developer’s tool kit and embedded in every application. Logging has also grown well beyond its text file roots into a very powerful diagnostic tool. The talk will discuss various approaches to logging from a DYI logger using TStringList, to open source loggers like Log4D, to commercial loggers like CodeSite and SmartInspect. The pros and cons of each will be discussed so you can determine what is the best logging tool for your purposes and how best to apply it. A free copy of SmartInspect (www.gurock.com) will also be raffled off and a 25% discount code provided to all attendees.

Pizza will most likely be served (hows that for non-committal) so get there early to get a good seat and a good slice.

Remember, the meetings are now on WEDNESDAY! The meetings start at 7 and last for about 2 hours. There is a map to the meeting location under the New Location menu item to the left on our website, www.OCDelphi.org.

Getting Things Done with Greg Stevenson on Feb 25, 09

Greg Stevenson says: This will be a free class on GTD in a regular meeting room. It is a combined meeting with the OC Delphi User Group, which has been kind enough to let me take over one of their meetings to make the presentation.

I will be the presenter and am not a GTD expert, DavidCo consultant, etc. However, I think I have a good enough handle on the concepts and my own system to put together a good basic presentation.

Class will be just two hours so this will obviously not be as thorough or in depth as the full day DavidCo seminars. However, I'm hoping it will be sufficient to:

-Introduce people who never heard of GTD to it. -Give a frame of reference that will make sense when people read/re-read the GTD book. -Tips and tricks to ease into GTD. -Show people how to create their own custom GTD system using mine as an example.

Some special areas of emphasis include: -Handling the piles of "Stuff" on your desk and elsewhere -Getting your email in-boxes to zero and keeping them there. -The practical approach to project planning -Tips to make sure your doing the right thing at the right time.

Space will be limited to about 30 people so RSVP early. I'm giving the members of OC-GTD, OCDUG, and Brick Software (who hosts the meeting place) the opportunity to RSVP first. Then after Feb. 4th I will open it up to others. Prior to Feb 4th, send me an email if you would like to bring one or more guests and I'll put them on a list (first come first serve) for the remaining spots be for promoting it to other groups.

If this presentation seems successful, I may try to do another one with a bigger venue later.

Pizza will most likely be served (hows that for non-committal) so get there early to get a good seat and a good slice.

Unicode with Delphi 2009 (meeting 1/28/09)

This month we will be discussing the new Unicode support in Delphi 2009. Steve Kramer will be running the show so come on out to learn about Unicode.

Pizza will most likely be served (hows that for non-committal) so get there early to get a good seat and a good slice.

May Meeting on 5/28/08 - Linux and Linux Distros for the Uninitiated

This month Larry Lichtmann Will be our presenter.

The open-source Linux operating system has been a significant presence in the server world for some time, and, though still a sliver on the client systems market share pie chart, it is increasingly seen as a viable alternative to Windows for personal computer users. This talk is a basic introduction for the technically savvy but still virgin on the workings of the Linux operating system. The distinction between “Linux” and a “Linux Distro” will illuminated, and a survey of the most important distros will be presented.

Remember, the meetings are now on WEDNESDAY! The meetings start at 7 and last for about 2 hours. There is a map to the meeting location under the New Location menu item to the left.

Thanks,

Virtual Explosion: A Survey of Virtualization Software for Real Developers

This months meeting will be on April 23th and will be presented by Larry Lichtmann & Robert Baker

A previous talk by one of us (LL) introduced OCDUG to the value of OS virtualization (in its incarnation as VMWare) for the working software developer. Some years have passed, "virtualization" now ranks somewhere just below "Web 2.0" and "AJAX" as an industry buzzword, and virtualization options have multiplied faster than rabbits on Cialis®. This talk will review the choices now available, including the spectrum of offerings from consensus segment leader VMWare; those from the industry's 500-lb parakeet, Microsoft, real and vapor; as well as a selection of open-source applications, of both the "immaculate conception" and "first hit free" varieties. No liquor will be served, but programs will be demonstrated.

Don't miss this one, everyone can benefit from virtualization.

The meeting will be at 7pm and as always will last about 2 hours. Rumor has it pizza will be served so arrive early for the best seats and the hottest pizza.

eyebol Pascal Analyzer v2 just released
Posted by webmaster on Saturday, January 12 @ 11:02:26 CST (715 reads)

eyebol writes "Just released is version 2.00b of eyebol pascal analyzer. It has many unique features. Not only are there over 50 new hints and warnings but many have fixes that you can automatically apply to your code, either one at a time at the press of a button or through the project rewrite option. Don't worry - a backup is always taken. Spell check both your forms and code (Showmessage, MessageDlg, etc.) with a selection of dictionaries Rename components such as those with only default names (e.g. Button1 with caption "OK" becomes "btnOK"). This is fully configurable and improved dramatically in this version. Search facility allows you to search with/without comments and regular expressions but also a powerful variable expression search (e.g. integer1:=0; would return i:=0; etc.) Integrates with Delphi 5 to Delphi 2007 Comment Builder Wizard allows you to quickly and easily put a comment header at the start of all your source files (e.g. Mozilla license or JavaDoc style) Version 2 also introduces the ability to scan and spell check html and aspx files though this feature is in its infancy. Theres also some basic project statistics (routines, uses, etc.) 30 day trial available here Website: www.pascalanalyzer.com Thanks Michael "

Automatic synchronization of database structure with LINQ to SQL model.
Posted by webmaster on Saturday, January 12 @ 11:02:05 CST (607 reads)

PerpetuumSoft writes "At last, event that was awaited for a long time by the whole developers’ community and that is expected to make developers work much easier happened – final release of .Net Framework 3.5 featuring LINQ technology is published. This very technology, as Microsoft specialists designed it, should dramatically optimize programming in general.

Mapping of relational data into object model has always been one of the most complicated problems developers face with when they design object-oriented systems. In most cases data queries are written in SQL, and their result is converted into objects. Developers have to work with absolutely different data representations. This increases effort required for the creation and support of such software application and makes appearance of errors more possible."
